Concrete in the County Seat
Kountze is the county seat of Hardin County, about 25 miles north of Beaumont on U.S. Route 287, and the farthest north of the towns our concrete contractors serve. The city calls itself the Gateway to the Big Thicket, and it fits. The Big Thicket National Preserve, set up by Congress in 1974, covers much of the surrounding country. Kountze sits at 85 feet above sea level, north of Cypress Creek, on ground that is higher and more wooded than the coastal cities.
A railroad town from 1881
Kountze was founded in 1881 as a railroad town and named for Herman and Augustus Kountze, who backed the Sabine and East Texas Railroad. The Kirby-Hill House, built in 1902, was the first home in Hardin County listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town stays small. The 2020 census counted 1,981 residents and 839 housing units. Many homes sit on bigger, tree-covered lots outside the center.
Planning a slab in the woods
Wooded property is beautiful, but trees and concrete compete for the same ground. On Kountze jobs we:
1. Lay out the slab with you so it avoids the trees you want to keep 2. Remove stumps and large roots from the footprint so they do not rot and leave voids 3. Strip organic topsoil down to firm soil 4. Build up a compacted base to the grade we need 5. Reinforce with rebar, especially near trees that stay
Skipping steps two and three is a common reason slabs in wooded areas sink in spots a few years later.
Shop and barn slabs
On larger lots around Kountze, a shop or barn slab is one of the most common requests. These slabs carry vehicles, equipment, workbenches and sometimes a lift. We pour them with thickened edges under the walls, rebar on chairs, a vapor barrier for enclosed buildings and saw-cut joints. We set anchor bolts where your builder needs them, and we can leave a slight slope toward the door so washdown water runs out.
Driveways and county roads
A drive off a county road or Route 287 needs a good connection at the road and often a culvert at the ditch. We check what the county or state requires for that connection. On long drives, we can pour the portion near the house first and extend later.
The rest of the list
We also pour patios, often covered, for outdoor living on wooded lots. Shade keeps them comfortable but also damp, so we recommend a sealer to slow mildew. Stamped concrete works well for front entries. Sidewalks link the drive, porch and outbuildings. And we repair what is there: cracked panels, broken steps and sunken sections around older homes in town.
Pine debris, shade and sealing
On wooded lots, concrete spends much of the day in shade, collecting needles, leaves and pollen. Shade keeps the surface damp longer after rain, which invites mildew and dark staining. None of this hurts the strength of the slab, but it affects how it looks. A penetrating sealer slows water from soaking in, and a film-forming sealer on stamped or colored concrete protects the finish. Plan to clean and reseal every few years. Blowing off debris regularly also keeps tannins from leaves from staining light concrete.
Scheduling the drive north
Kountze is a longer drive than most of our service area, so we group estimates and pours when we can. Tell us what you need and we will set a time that works.

Kountze Questions
Do you work as far north as Kountze?
Yes. Kountze is about 25 miles north of Beaumont, and we serve it along with the rest of Hardin County nearby.
Why did my slab near the trees sink in spots?
Often because roots or stumps were left under it and rotted, or because organic topsoil was not removed. We cut out the low areas, clear and rebuild the base and re-pour.
Can you pour a barn slab with a slope to the door?
Yes. A slight fall toward the door lets water run out when you hose the floor. We keep it gentle so it does not affect equipment.
