Concrete on the Prairie South of Fannett

Hamshire is a rural community in western Jefferson County on State Highway 124, about 20 miles southwest of Beaumont, and most of what concrete contractors build here is for country properties: shop and barn slabs, long driveways and patios. The 2020 census counted 962 residents. The elevation is 13 feet, which on flat, open land means water drains slowly after a heavy rain.

From railroad stop to gas field

The name probably comes from Lovan Hamshire, who developed the land as early as the 1870s. A post office opened in 1897 when the community was on the Gulf and Interstate Railway, and Theodore F. Koch filed a townsite plat in 1911. Later that year Herbert Roedenbeck subdivided land south of the railroad as Hamshire Gardens. Oil discoveries at the Fannett field in 1927 and the Stowell field in 1941 helped the town grow, and natural gas from the Hamshire field stayed important through the 1980s.

Building up, not just down

On low, flat land, a slab poured at grade sits in water after storms. For Hamshire jobs we:

1. Strip grass and topsoil 2. Bring in select fill and compact it in lifts to raise the pad 3. Slope the finished surface toward an open side 4. Grade the soil around the slab down and away 5. Set culverts under driveways where they cross a ditch

This is the most important part of a country slab. Concrete on a raised, compacted base stays drier and moves less.

Shops, barns and equipment

We pour slabs for metal buildings, horse barns, equipment sheds and carports. Each one is sized for what it holds. A shop with a lift or heavy trucks needs more thickness and steel than a storage shed. We work from the building plans so anchor bolts and door openings land in the right spots, and we add thickened edges under walls.

Drives and patios

Many homes in Hamshire sit back from Highway 124 or the farm roads. We pave drives in concrete, often starting near the house and extending later, and check what the state or county needs for the road connection. Back patios, covered or open, are the other common job. A broom finish gives traction; stamped concrete adds a finished look by the house.

Curing and keeping traffic off

A new slab needs time before it carries weight. Light foot traffic is usually fine the next day. Cars can typically use a new drive after about a week. Heavy trucks, tractors and loaded trailers should wait longer, since concrete keeps gaining strength for about a month. In the meantime, we keep the surface moist or sealed with a curing compound so it does not dry out too fast in the sun and wind on open land. We will tell you when the slab is ready for each kind of load.

Small jobs count too

Not every Hamshire project is a barn floor. We also pour walks from the house to a shop or chicken coop, pads for propane tanks, AC units and generators, front steps with even risers, and short aprons where a gravel drive meets the garage. Small pours follow the same rules as big ones: strip the soft soil, compact the base, slope for water and cure the concrete properly.

If you have a few small jobs in mind, list them all. Pouring them on the same day often saves you a separate trip charge for each.

Schools and neighbors

Hamshire shares the Hamshire-Fannett school district with Fannett to the north. We serve both communities and the open country between them. Smaller jobs like walks, steps, AC pads and crack repair are welcome too.
